The Foundation/Who we are
The collector and design researcher Torsten Bröhan founded the Bröhan Design Foundation (BDF) in Berlin in 2005. The aim of the foundation is to convey a fundamental understanding of aesthetic design to future generations. To this end, the Bröhan Design Foundation (BDF) is building a virtual design archive, conducting basic research into the history of design, carrying out research projects on selected people and topics and designing exhibitions and publications.
Design topics and designers that are neglected by public research at museums, universities, colleges and universities of applied sciences are selected for the implementation of the objectives.
The founder of the foundation is convinced that at the beginning of the 20th century, social developments and artistic achievements manifested themselves in a unique way in design. As a culture-forming phenomenon, design also has a value-forming, political, enlightening and educational effect.
As a non-profit foundation, the Bröhan Design Foundation (BDF) is authorized to accept donations that support the foundation’s purpose of promoting science, research, education and training, art and culture.
bidd
The Bröhan Institute for Design Documentation (bidd) was completed in May 2017 at Am Lokdepot 11 in Kreuzberg after almost three years of planning and construction. The bidd is operated by the Bröhan Design Foundation (BDF) – founded by Torsten Bröhan – which now has a significantly improved infrastructure at its disposal for future research, exhibition and publication projects.
The bidd has an extensive library on the history of design and architecture and a historical design archive, which includes original drafts of important design works as well as objects of everyday culture made of wood, glass, porcelain, ceramics, metal and plastic. The archive also contains a large number of works on paper from all areas of typography, e.g. posters, brochures, flyers, advertising postcards, commercials, etc., which also serve the bidd as a basis for research.
The bidd sees itself as an independent non-profit organization that implements the objectives of the Bröhan Design Foundation. It ensures that the results of basic research and special research projects are made available to experts and the public interested in design topics in the form of exhibitions, publications and specialist lectures.
